Monitored Release Debut Album “Ruins”: A Cybernetic Vision of Metal
Heraklion-based designer and musician Vangelis Makridakis, known as VAG, steps into new sonic territory with the launch of his progressive metal project Monitored and their debut album Ruins, released this week. The record fuses mechanical precision with human emotion—an ambitious fusion that blurs the line between man and machine, echoing the conceptual spirit of modern AI-driven creation.
Rooted in the ferocity and experimentation of early 1990s metal, Ruins channels the intensity of the era VAG grew up in. As a teenager, he spent his formative years forming garage bands, attending underground shows, and absorbing the raw sound of groups like Dream Theater, Evanescense, Within Temptation and Cynic. Decades later, that influence emerges transformed—filtered through an AI-assisted compositional process that VAG calls “humanized automation.”
Recorded in Heraklion with a hybrid workflow combining generative systems and analog instruments, Ruins unfolds across ten tracks of intricate time signatures, layered harmonies, and cinematic textures. Each song explores decay and rebirth in the age of digital consciousness. The album’s sound feels like machinery awakening to emotion—melancholic, angular, but strangely beautiful.
Conceptually, Ruins is about what’s left behind when progress consumes itself.
