The Birth of Monitored: VAG’s Pursuit of Sonic Perfection

At the dawn of 2025, Heraklion-based designer and musician Vangelis Makridakis, known as VAG, began an ambitious new creative endeavor. After years of experimenting with sound, form, and visual design, he launched Monitored—a progressive metal project born from a relentless pursuit of sonic precision and lyrical depth. For VAG, it wasn’t simply about forming another band; it was about sculpting an experience that bridges art, technology, and emotion.

The journey toward Monitored began with a simple question: how can human expression survive in a world increasingly shaped by automation? In an age when artificial intelligence can generate music, lyrics, and even emotion, VAG sought to reclaim the imperfections that make creativity alive. His mission became to fuse digital intelligence with human intuition, allowing both to coexist in an evolving dialogue of sound.

Throughout early 2025, VAG immersed himself in both analog and algorithmic workflows, testing boundaries between organic instrumentation and AI-assisted composition. He devoted countless hours fine-tuning textures, experimenting with tonal balance, and searching for words that could resonate equally through machines and minds. The result was a creative process that was as introspective as it was technical—a continual balancing act between precision and chaos.

Lyrically, Monitored draws from existential and philosophical themes: conflict, decay, renewal, and the fragile connection between humanity and its creations. Each word is chosen to fit not just rhythm and rhyme but the conceptual backbone of the band’s identity. The stories told within these songs often unfold like cinematic dialogues between man and machine, representing both collaboration and confrontation.

This pursuit of sonic and thematic coherence gave rise to a distinctive signature—polished yet raw, mathematical yet emotive. In his studio in Heraklion, surrounded by both digital tools and analog relics, VAG began sculpting a sound that could stand outside of transient trends. Every track would serve as a reflection of his lifelong chase for what he calls “sonic truth”—a state where every frequency, word, and silence feels necessary.

By mid-2025, this vision had evolved into Monitored, a project embodying both the purity of design and the unpredictability of emotion. It’s not only a band, but an experiment in connection: between creator and code, sound and silence, humanity and the machines that listen back.
